Biological control of invasive zebra mussel (Dreissen polymorpha) in a freshwater ecosystem through Potamon ibericum

چکیده

In the present study, possible effects of using Potamon ibericum for prevention zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) invasion in a freshwater ecosystem were investigated. recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) supplied with aerated freshwater, 3 individuals P. placed each aquariums provided by 100 mussels. Throughout 90-day monitoring consumption was visually counted and then new mussels introduced daily to complete number hundred, repeatedly day. growth rates, consumed, broken shell pieces determined. Daily rate crab recorded as 11.115, 11.104, 11.107 mussel/crab experimental groups, respectively. The per 999.78 over 90-days experiment. As result, findings this study provide strong evidence that can be used

Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) parasites: potentially useful bioindicators of freshwater quality?

In environmental quality bioassessment studies, analysis of host-parasite interactions may well be a valuable alternative to classical macroinvertebrate sampling approaches. Herein, we investigated whether zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) parasites could be useful biomonitoring tools. Mussel populations were sampled twice at two sites in northeastern France representing different levels of c...

Long-term demography of a zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) population

1. We used long-term data and a simulation model to investigate temporal fluctuations in zebra mussel populations, which govern the ecological and economic impacts of this pest species. 2. The size of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) population in the Hudson River estuary fluctuated approximately 11-fold across a 13-year period, following a cycle with a 2–4 year period. 3. This cycling w...

Increased benthic algal primary production in response to the invasive zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in a productive ecosystem, Oneida Lake, New York.

Increased water clarity associated with zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) populations may favor benthic algal primary production in freshwater systems previously dominated by pelagic phytoplankton production. While zebra mussel-mediated water clarity effects on benthic primary production have been implicated in published reports, few production estimates are available. This study estimates be...

The Invasive Bivalves Dreissena Polymorpha and Limnoperna Fortunei: Parallels, Contrasts, Potential Spread and Invasion Impacts

We contrast ecological and life history traits of the well studied freshwater invader, the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), with the lesser known invasive golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) to compare salient biological traits and environmental limits, and to predict the potential spread and ecosystem impacts ofL. fortunei in areas where it is introduced. Both species are sessile, byssate ...
